EP 3: How to Stop Listening to That Voice in Your Head That Says You Can’t

Welcome to the Do It Scared podcast! In every episode of this podcast, we’ll talk about how to face your fears, overcome obstacles, and create a life you love!

If you’re anything like me, you probably have a voice in your head that’s always telling you that “you can’t.” You might also hear it whispering that you’re not good enough, or smart enough, or pretty enough. If you’re ready to shut down that little voice, this is the episode for you! I want to give you practical strategies that you can implement starting today.

Here are three powerful strategies you can use to overcome your own limiting beliefs:

  1. Name the fear. Identify the thought or belief that’s playing in your head, and figure out what exactly the fear is.
  2. Change the tape. Replace the message that your negative inner voice tells you with a new message, and intentionally craft a new script for yourself.
  3. Create accountability. It’s really hard to let people in and be real and authentic, especially when it comes to our limiting beliefs, but it’s important to have someone who will call you out when necessary.

Highlights

[04:13] – We hear about a recent conversation that Ruth had with a friend who had a limiting belief on the topic of writing.

[06:34] – Limiting beliefs can come in all shapes and sizes, and appear in all areas of our lives. They’re also shapeshifters, Ruth explains.

[08:24] – Ruth lists some examples of common limiting beliefs that an internal negative little voice says to people.

[09:48] – While we can’t always stop limiting beliefs from popping up, there is something that we can do.

[10:13] – Ruth discusses what this looks like in practice, since the reality can be a lot more challenging than it sounds.

[12:36] – We learn about Ruth’s second key strategy to overcome your limiting beliefs, which involves positive self-talk.

[14:05] – Ruth takes a moment to clarify what she doesn’t mean by affirmations, joking about the SNL skit of Stuart Smalley. She then clarifies what good affirmations look like.

[16:34] – We arrive at Ruth’s third strategy for overcoming limiting beliefs, which involves having someone in your life who’s willing to challenge you.

[19:29] – When you surround yourself with people who will speak truth to you, you need to be ready to hear hard things. Ruth offers a personal example to illustrate this point.

[20:49] – Ruth asks listeners a specific question that can lead to finding the accountability you need in your life.
