Carissa is the founder of Mom Needs Chocolate, a business devoted to helping women find the sweetness in the everyday crazy. As she explains in our conversation, she gets fired up about creating recipes and writing helpful content, but struggles with actually posting it. She also has a hard time staying motivated to do the tasks that don’t feel urgent right now, even when she knows they’ll pay off later.
After six years of blogging, Carissa has been feeling stuck since January. (Finding out that her site speed was awful and needing to tear apart her whole site to fix it didn’t help!) Quitting her job in March to focus on her blog was supposed to help her regain her enthusiasm, but instead it did the opposite. Besides getting her spark back, Carissa also needs help with strategic details like figuring out how to prioritize her to-do list and her time.
I’m all too familiar with Carissa’s experiences, and went through some pretty similar things in the terrifying period after my husband quit his job. And I’m delighted to be able to help Carissa today! We’ll focus on working through Carissa’s self-doubt and bringing back her zest for working on her blog.
Tune into today’s episode to hear more about all of these things, as well as how Carissa can make the same amount in less time in her work for other people, why she isn’t allowed to work on writing any new blog posts right now, and five powerful action steps that will help her tremendously (and may help you, too!).

Listened this morning on my way to work and wanted to add 2 things that I have found sometimes get me unstuck! I set a timer for my tasks. I also work primarily alone and have too many things on the plate. For example you said that you work 30 hours a week on “other people’s stuff” (also generating income which is necessary) then set a timer each day in 1 hour increments, when you energy is high, for what you need to do to make your business go back to being a positive in not only the income column but the emotional column. Do this for 2 hours each day, 80% other, 20% your business! I find that I don’t really spend as much time as I think on things and if really focused I get a heck of a lot done in those 1 hour increments. I will tell you that I have trouble stopping after an hour but… You could also do this right after everyone leaves you in the morning. Set an hour and then shower because your PJ inertia or there are so many house things to do will be overcome with the energy of getting something done! Or as the old fall back, get up like you are going to work and go to Panera! Also read the Eat the Frog stuff before you go to bed each night and get a frog for your desk/kitchen table.
My other 2 cents, add a $1.00 an hour to your hourly rate for the blogging clients. If they won’t pay then only spend the time for what that rate would be on their posts! And keep track of your time for real. (can you tell I like timers) It might actually be a good time to do it since everyone is so busy with the holidays (I know sounds kind of yucky to “take advantage” but….. ) and it could set the precedent for the new year when you should raise your rates!
I never do this but I felt your struggle and have just been using the above hack to keep myself moving so maybe it would help! It also costs no money, there is a timer on your phone! I tend to buy new tools to solve these type of time management problems.
I write this in tears… I’m only 11 minutes and 44 seconds into the podcast and resonant sooo much with what Carissa is saying…feeling stuck, overwhelmed, I resigned as a teacher after 20 years of services and I’ve been granted this awesome opportunity to stay home and pursue making a viable income from home and I feel like I’m blowing it! I spoke working location independent into existence, I’ve been waiting for this since 2016. Its here and I feel totally unprepared. I’m pretty sure I need a coach to help me sort through all I have going on and guidance on which way to go. This new life of entrepreneurship is extremely overwhelming as I’m learning different things about the digital world of blogging, ranking products, etc. Honestly I’m just feeling lost and like a total failure AND I know I’m not a failure! When Carissa mentioned that she had to change her energy and treat this like a real job…I spoke these words right before I found this podcast… Confirmation that I am indeed in the right place. (Big sigh…) I guess what I’m saying is what I’m experiencing is not out of the norm. I’m glad I found this podcast. I really needed to share and release my own feelings. Thank you Carissa for sharing your story. I’m going to finish listening to the podcast now. I’m looking forward to hearing the strategies you will give Ruth.😊
I need a coach badly!!! For many things.,especially for taking care of me! Losing weight-exercising-not emotional eating! I’m 67. My Mom had eating disorders.. It needs to stop! Can you help me….
